Most of the soldiers had fallen in July 1916 at the beginning of the Battle of the Somme.

It has 1,676 burials, including 1,582 British, 91 Australian, 2 Canadian, and 1 Indian. 1,000 bodies are not identified. It is in this cemetery that the tomb of British footballer Donald Simpson Bell is located in memory of which a stele was erected in Contalmaison.
