About

The Théâtre des Carmes d'Avignon was founded in 1963 by André Benedetto, author and actor, Jacqueline Benedetto, his wife and Bertrand Hurault, in the former parish hall Saint-Benoît dependent on the church Saint-Symphorien-les-Carmes. At the beginning, outside the theatrical season, it was a dance hall, discotheque or bowling room. Today this room is considered a reference of French theatre in Avignon.

In addition to its own productions, it hosts works by famous authors, renowned actors, theatre workshops, internship students, musicians or lecturers. This theatre is the place where regularly plays the "New Compagnie d'Avignon", a theatre troupe created by André Benedetto and Bertrand Hurault. She made her debut in the winter of 1961.

Since Benedetto's "Manifest of 1966", the program base, this troupe has played almost only works by its creator.
