Church building
église Notre-Dame de Fontenay-le-Comte
Notre Dame Church is a Roman Catholic church located in Fontenay-le-Comte, southeast of the Vendée, France. The church was attached from 1317 to 1648 to the former diocese of Maillezais, before the latter was poured into the diocese of La Rochelle. Since the Concordat of 11 June 1817, the church is now in the diocese of Luçon.
If the existence of an earlier building of the Romanesque period is attested by the presence of a crypt, the church was entirely rebuilt in the 15th century in the flamboyant Gothic style. This construction was the victim of several destructions during the Wars of Religion in the sixteenth century, destroying the vaults and destroying the arrow, and was transformed into a temple of Reason in 1794. The building was gradually rehabilitated by a series of restorations during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The church was listed as a historical monument in 1862.
