Church building
église Saint-Just de Lyon
The church Saint-Just or Saint-Just-des-Machabées is a religious building located in Lyon (Rhône), in the 5th arrondissement. It was built in the 16th century, following the destruction of one of the oldest churches in Lyon, the Basilica of Saint-Just. But it was outside the walls, while the new church was built inside the walls, about 200 metres away.
The basilica was first dedicated to the Macchabees (the seven Macchabees brothers and their mother), then to Saint Just de Lyon, the 13th bishop of the city in the fourth century. The present church, which has the status of collegiate, keeps in its names this double reference. It has been classified as historical monuments since 18 December 1980.
