General: According to Abbés Therme and Étienne Bethe, parish priests at Lachapelle-Graillouse in the first half of the 20th century, a church and therefore a parish existed here in the year 938. Indeed, on that date, Ithier, from the house of Mercœur d'Auvergne, gives to his son Gauthier as canon of Saint-Julien-de-Brioude several properties in Auvergne with among others, the church of Lachapelle-Graillouse. The fourth abbot of Cluny, Saint Odilon de Mercœur (c. 962 - 1048), studied and trained in religious life at Gauthier de Mercœur, who was his cousin.
