About

The former Saint-Étienne de Saleilles church is a Romanesque church located in Saleilles, France.

Location: The Romanesque church Saint-Étienne is located on the heights of the old village, between the street of Marshal Joffre to the south and the street of the Old Church to the north.

History: The Romanesque church of Saint-Étienne could have been built around the 10th century, being cited as early as 927. However, it was destroyed in 985 during a passage of the Moors and rebuilt for the first time in 1024. The present church seems to have been rebuilt in the course of the 12th century by the shape of the windows and the vault. A defence wall was built in the 13th century and a bell tower was added in 1861, including a melted bell in the 16th century. This church was never the center of a parish and Saleilles then depended on the parish of Théza. Since 1894, a new place of worship is located nearby, in the parish church Saint-Étienne de Saleilles and the Romanesque church is no longer used. She was disused in 1913. The church is listed as a historical monument by order of 19 November 1985. L...
