The needle of Midi is a summit of France located in Haute-Savoie, in the Mont-Blanc massif, above Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. Climbing at 3,842 meters, it is the highest needle in Chamonix. On the main summit rises a tower, carrying telecommunication antennas, which represents the current highlight. The needle is the point of arrival of the Aiguille du Midi cable car from Chamonix; Its top station is located at 3,777 meters above sea level. It is the starting point for the descent of the White Valley and the Panoramic Mont-Blanc cable car that crosses the Giant Glacier to the Helbronner Point on the Italian slope at 3,462 meters, with its stunning views over the Aosta Valley and the entire Piedmont. The needle houses the highest radio emission centre in France.
Toponymy: The summit is named Agouelye de Mi-jorn (pronounce [a'g The Midi needle probably owes its name to its location south of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc because seen from the city centre, the sun passes to the right of the summit around noon.
