arboretum de Xertigny
The Arboretum de Xertigny (4 hectares), also known as the Arboretum du Château des Brasseurs, is an arboretum and municipal park located in Xertigny in the Vosges. It is open daily, and access is free. The arboretum was created in 1994 to protect the former Château des Brasseurs Park, originally created in 1888 by Victor Champion, the owner of a local brewery, who planted a number of trees in North America and Asia during the development of the park.
Although the Xertigny brewery closed in 1966, and the castle now houses the municipality, the arboretum preserves many centuries-old trees, including beautiful specimens of Araucaria, Yellow Cladastris, Douglas-fir, Fraxinus ornus, and Sequoiadendron (45 metres). The adjacent Beaudoin Wood offers other forest trails. A village legend tells that Champion discovered the treasure of the Templars in these woods, who provided the fortune to create castle and park; the location of its discovery is duly reported.
