château de Gannat
Gannat Castle is a building located in Gannat, France. It now houses the Yves-Machelon Municipal Museum.
Location: The castle is located in the commune of Gannat, in the department of Allier, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is located north of the city centre, Place des Anciens-d'AFN and Place Rantian.
History: Gannat Castle is not the first castle established on the site of the city. It was preceded by a castral motte built in the immediate vicinity of the present site of St. Croix Church; The foundations of two towers, one round the other square, were found in the nineteenth century. Around 1200 or a little later, the present castle is built further north, at the edge of the city. When the bourgeois of Gannat obtained in 1236 a charter of franchises and the city was surrounded by a enclosure, the castle leaned on it, but outside the walls, near the northern gate of the city. The building was listed as historic monuments in 1926.
