About

Hohrupf Castle (or Hohenrupf Castle) is located in Lautenbachzell (High Rhine). It was probably built by Berthold de Steinbronn, abbot of Murbach from 1260 to 1285, to protect the abbey. A rectangular dungeon (10 m by 8) ran the summit at 813 m altitude.

The period of abandonment of the castle, which served as a prison in 1444, is unknown. The site was used as an observatory by the German army from 1915 to 1918.
