Saint-Charles-Borromée Cathedral is a Catholic cathedral located in Saint-Étienne, France. Placed under the invocation of Saint Charles Borromée, it was built between 1912 and 1923 on land given to the parish by the Palluat family of Besset. It has been the seat of the diocese of Saint-Étienne since its creation on December 26, 1970.
History: The plan for a large church was decided in 1825 on land purchased by the city in 1828. In 1862 a contest was launched and Pierre-Marie Bossan won it (director of Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica). However, the project is delayed due to litigation with the land owners. After years of storage in the city archives, they were destroyed in a fire and had to be resumed. Canon Rivoire succeeded in recovering preliminary drawings from Pierre-Marie Bossan's partner, Frédéric Giniez, who had been preserved by his children.[ref.
