Chapel
chapelle Notre-Dame de l'Iseran ou Notre-Dame-de-Toute-Prudence de Col de l'Iseran
The Notre-Dame-de-Toute-Prudence Chapel is a Catholic chapel located at the Col de l'Iseran in the municipality of Bonneval-sur-Arc at an altitude of approximately 2,770 m. It rises near the road that passes the highest mountain road pass of France, to connect the valleys of the Maurienne and the Tarentaise. It was built shortly after the opening of the road inaugurated by the President of the Republic Albert Lebrun on July 10, 1937, at the initiative of Bishop Auguste Grumel of Maurienne.
His project had been supported by Pope Pius XI, who had practiced mountaineering. Completed in 1939, it was built according to the plans of Savoyard architect Maurice Novarina and the company that had established the road. The building is made of stone from the area, and the cover is lauze.
The two statues of the Virgin are the sculptor Edgar Delvaux. Funding was realized through subscriptions and private donations, including that of the Vatican. The bishop's blessing of the chapel took place on August 20, 1939.
It has the Label "Heritage of the 20th Century".
