Church building
église Notre-Dame-de-Recouvrance des Tourailles
The Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Recouvrance des Tourailles, also known as the Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-Recouvrance, is the current Catholic parish church of the Tourailles, a commune delegated by Athis-Val de Rouvre.
Location: The basilica is located in the center of the Tourailles, about ten kilometers from the center of the new municipality of Athis-Val de Rouvre.
History: A first monastery and a church were located in the Touraille in the 9th century. During the Norman invasions, the monastery was destroyed. However, the religious buildings were rebuilt following the conversion of the Normans. Hidden from the Normans, the statue of the Virgin was found intact in the place where she had been buried some time earlier and was put back in the church. The faithful began to worship her under the name of Notre-Dame-de-la-Recouvrance, which was frequently invoked by the sailors' wives in Normandy to find their husbands. A new statue was made in the 14th century. The first church was built in the 11th or 12th century and was given to the diocese by Foucher des Tourailles in 1208. The site gained importance in the 16th century...
