About

The Notre-Dame-du-Carmel chapel of Courbassil (in Catalan: Mare de Déu del Carme de Cortvassil) is a religious building located in the hamlet of Courbassil, in Porta, in the French department of the Pyrénées-Orientales, in the Occitan region.

Description: The chapel is located at the edge of National Road 20, at the northern entrance of the hamlet of Courbassil. Its composition is simple: it consists of a small rectangular nave inserted into the topography, without abscessing. It is built of stone, and covered in lauze on a wooden frame. Its road façade features a small door surrounded by a small window on each side, on which is a Latin inscription "Anni 1866. Ego Semper Your Custodiam".

History: The chapel is already attested in the Napoleonic cadastre of 1830, 50 m to the south, at the former crossroads of the entrance of Courbassil. According to tradition, the chapel was built to commemorate the survival of a statue of the Virgin Mary to an avalanche that swept everything through her passage. It was rebuilt in 1866 at the edge of National Road 20, as indicated by the lintel of the road façade.
