About

The castle of Quéribus (in Occitan: castèl de Querbús) is a former castle known as "cathare", now in ruins, whose remains stand on the French commune of Cucugnan in the department of Aude, in the Occitan region. The castle, probably dating back to the tenth century, would have been one of the defence points of the Cathar country. After its capture in 1255, it was integrated into the military apparatus desired by the French border defence crown against Aragon.

The annexation of the Roussillon by France (Treaty of the Pyrenees, 1659), which pushed the border back to the Pyrenees, greatly diminished its strategic importance. The castle deteriorated until 1951, when it was gradually restored. He is a candidate for UNESCO heritage registration in conjunction with the city of Carcassonne, all the Royal Fortresses of Languedoc, the "Five Sons of Carcassonne" of which he is part with the castles of Aguilar, Peyrepertuse, Puilaurens, Termes and also with the castles of Montségur and Lastours.
