About

The national park of the Pyrenees or the national park of the Western Pyrenees, created by Pierre Chimits in March 1967, is one of the eleven national parks of France. It is located in the south of the country in the western part of the mountain massif of the Pyrenees, on top of the departments of the Hautes-Pyrénées (now Occitanie region) and the Pyrénées-Atlantiques (now Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). The current regions have been in effect since 2016. The park's objective is, through strict regulation, to preserve the beauty of the sites and to protect endangered plant and animal species. The Pyrénées National Park consists of two areas: the central area, known as the "heart of the park" since the 2006 law, and the peripheral area, called the "optimal area of membership". The value of this distinction is the more flexible regulation in the peripheral area, designed to benefit from economic, social and cultural investments in order to curb the rural exodus and develop tourism equipment in the region.

The heart of the park has an area of 45,707 ha, on 15 communes, with a minimum altitude of 1,273 meters and a maximum of 3,298 meters (Le Vignemale)...
