cimetière communal d'Aveluy, extension
The Aveluy Communal Cemetery Extension is a military cemetery of the First World War, located on the territory of the commune of Aveluy, in the department of the Somme, northeast of Amiens.
Location: This cemetery, located north of the village, adjoins the communal cemetery in the same street.
The village of Aveluy was held by Commonwealth forces from July 1915 to March 26, 1918. The extension of the communal cemetery, begun by the French who previously held this part of the line, was continued by British field units and ambulances from August 1915 to March 1917. On 26 and 27 March 1918, the village and cemetery were lost in the German advance but were resumed at the end of August. Most of the victims buried in this cemetery are wounded soldiers, who died in nearby field hospitals. That's why there are few unknown soldiers unlike other cemeteries on the front line. The extension of the Aveluy Communal Cemetery contains 613 burials and commemorations of the First World War, 26 of which are unidentified.
