A historic monument is, in France, a movable or immovable property, receiving by an administrative decision a legal status and a label intended to protect it, because of its historical, artistic or architectural interest. Two levels of protection exist: a monument can be "classified" or "listed" among historical monuments. Registration (known until 2005 as "the supplementary inventory of historic monuments") is a protection of monuments of outstanding regional interest, contrary to classification, protecting monuments of national interest and thus constituting the highest level of protection.
In the case of real estate, the protection decision lists the parts of the building that are protected, unless the building is completely protected (both external and internal), as well as its surroundings. The term "historical monuments", whether singular or plural, sometimes refers to a monument with a particular character or an ancient style, although it is not protected.
