Lion de Belfort
The Lion of Belfort is a high relief memorial located in Belfort, France, at the foot of the cliff of the citadel. The work of the Alsatian sculptor Auguste Bartholdi commemorates the resistance of the city under siege by the Prussians during the Franco-German war of 1870. The city and the arrondissement of Belfort, corresponding to the present territory of Belfort, were preserved by France when the Treaty of Frankfurt was signed in 1871, which made this territory the only part of Alsace to remain French.
