About

Notre-Dame-du-Réal Cathedral is a Catholic cathedral located in the Hautes-Alpes department of France. Former archiepiscopal seat of the Archdiocese of Embrun, it is now attached to the diocese of Gap and Embrun.

Role and importance: This cathedral was once very famous. It was the seat of a strategic archdiocese for six centuries: that of a very great archdiocese and on the main path of the difficult crossing of the Alpine massif. It was therefore an umbilical stage of contact with the Catholic patriarch, the Roman papacy. She was named Notre-Dame-des-Rois. Apart from his mission as a transalpine link, there was a miraculous fresco very venerated by the Adoration of the Magi. This fresco was destroyed by the Protestants in 1585. It was the most important monument in the French Alps, between 1170 and 1225, a period of transition between Romanesque and Gothic style. It was largely inspired by the Lombard tradition.

Historical monument: This building was listed as a historic monument in 1840.
