Priory Notre-Dame de La Charité-sur-Loire is a Benedictine priory located in the Nièvre department, whose foundation charter dates back to 1059 with the donation of a Sainte-Marie church. It is known in 1070 as the Caritate and is part of the diocese of Auxerre. It underwent modifications in the 12th century, including the construction of a walkway with radiant chapels.
The church is best known for its bedside with radiant chapels and its facade (West) with its two eardrums. It belonged to an important priory, one of the five principals of the powerful abbey of Cluny (traditionally called her eldest daughters) located in Burgundy. That is why it was, in the Middle Ages, the second largest church in France, after that of Cluny III.
Rich and powerful, the Clunisian priory of La Charité-sur-Loire is enriched by numerous donations and possessions from its creation.
