Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral is a Gothic cathedral located in Clermont-Ferrand. It was built in 1248 in the centre of the city of Clermont, the historic capital of the Auvergne. It replaced a Romanesque cathedral in the same place that had been preceded by two other Christian shrines.

His initial patronage was that of Saint Vital and Saint Agricol. Most of the current construction dates from the second half of the 13th century, it is the first example of the use of the Volvic stone in architecture. The western facade and other renovations were carried out by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc during the second half of the 19th century.

Due to its size and unique character, it is now one of the city's symbols. The cathedral is built at the top of the central hill which forms the ancient centre of Clermont-Ferrand. It is located at the crossroads of the various streets and squares of the medieval period, taking over the route of the fortified city of the third century.
