Calvary
calvaire des Bretons
The Orvaire des Bretons is a Catholic religious monument located in the Hautes-Pyrénées department of France.
History: The calvary was built between 1899 and 1901 under the direction of architect Ernest Le Guerranic and the sculptures were made by sculptor Yves Hernot de Lannion. The Calvary was inaugurated on 13 September 1900.
Description: The Calvary of Lourdes represents the scene of Good Friday, when Jesus is crucified. The Calvary, 12 metres high, is composed of a Christ on a cross that measures 2 meters, statues of the Virgin, Saint John, Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint Longin that have a height of 1.80 m. It is a gift from the dioceses of Quimper, Saint-Brieuc, Vannes, Rennes and Nantes. As in their habits, the Hernots present Christ on a cross with a cylindrical drum with barks and at the ends, the head bent to the right, the feet joined.
Location: The Calvary is located in the commune of Lourdes, at the eastern entrance of the Sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Lourdes.
