About

The Tour d'Ope is an archaeological site located in Saint-Jean-de-Verges, in the Ariège department, in Occitanie, on the ridge of the Plantaurel massif, the first foothill of the Pyrenees south of Toulouse and overlooking the plain. The site includes a top Paleolithic cave deposit, a Celtic and Gallo-Roman oppidum, and a Middle Ages castral mot. The ancient period also has several satellite sites located in the vicinity, below the oppidum. The slope of the hill for the new 4-lane RN20 route has slightly encroached on the site's right-of-way at its western end.
