The Musée de la Musique de la Philharmonie de Paris is a French museum located in Paris, which opened in 1997. Heir to the collection of the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris, the museum has one of the most beautiful collections of instruments in the world, from the Middle Ages to the present, bringing together within the Philharmonie a collection of more than 8,000 instruments and art objects. Nearly 1,000 of them are presented in the permanent exhibition space, allowing to relate the history of Western music from the 16th century to the present and to give an overview of the main musical cultures around the world.
Located in the district of La Villette, in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, the museum occupies with the media library the wing on garden of the building called "Philharmonie 2" — formerly Cité de la musique —, built by Christian de Portzamparc, within the Philharmonie de Paris. In addition to the thousand works presented in the permanent exhibition in their geographical and historical context, the museum organizes temporary exhibitions, guided tours, free concerts and offers musical awakening workshops, promenade concerts and music tales.
