The castle of Arguel is a medieval castle whose remains stand on the commune of Fontain in the French department of Doubs and the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region.

Situation: The castle rises on the rocky ridge which dominates the village of Arguel on the east side and, on the west side, the Doubs valley of more than 250 m on the left bank.

History: The fortress was built in the 11th century by the first lords of Arguel. For two centuries, the lords of Arguel succeeded each other and took part in all the disputes that animated the life of the Comte barons of that time. One of them, Jacques d'Arguel, pointed out his misdeeds and abuses towards merchants who pass over his land. It is associated with the "Legend of the comet of the Sir of Arguel". In 1336, Jacques d'Arguel was defeated by the comtois barons in struggle against Eudes IV, Duke and Count of Burgundy and the castle was set on fire. By the testament of 1306, the lordship of Arguel had passed into the hands of the family of Chalon. Louis de Chalon, prince of Orange had the castle restored between 1430 and 1450.
