About

The church of the Celestines is an abandoned convent church, located in Avignon on the Place des Corps-Saints. It was built from 1389 on the initiative of the Antipap Clement VII and the King of France Charles VI near the tomb of Peter of Luxembourg. Many relics and the remains of illustrious characters were later deposited there.

Church of the Célestins of Avignon

The last foundation of the papacy of Avignon, the only royal foundation in the pontifical city, the convent of the Celestines was the richest in the city and still remains today, at least in its large work, the least degraded of its monastic establishments, always presenting its church, cloister and much of the regular buildings. The church has been classified as historical monuments since 8 June 1914. Due to the numerous relics that have been deposited there over time, the surrounding square has since 1843 been known as the place des Corps Saints.
