About

The crypt of Notre-Dame-des-Champs, known as the crypt of Notre-Dame des Champs at the Carmel of the Faubourg Saint-Jacques, Saint-Denis-sous-terre, crypt of Saint-Denis, or crypt of Carmel, is a crypt located between 10 and 12 meters under the underground parking of the building at the number 14bis rue Pierre-Nicole in the 5th arrondissement of Paris. A vestige of the ancient church of Sainte-Marie-des-Vignes of the Benedictine priory of Marmoutiers (XI and XVII centuries), the crypt is considered in popular tradition as the place of the first conversions made by Saint Denis. A stratified place of memory, closely linked to Saint Denis and the origins of Parisian Christianity, marked by the successive presence of Benedictines, early Dominicans and Carmelites, the crypt remains today a private property, closed to the public.
