Roman theatre
The Gallo-Roman theatre of Canouville is a building of ancient shows that disappeared in the present municipality of Canouville, in the Seine-Maritime department, Normandy (France). The ancient building is known by archaeological excavations of rescue carried out in the late 1970s before the construction of a subdivision. While archaeologists expect to find medieval elements as reported in a local tradition, they partially elevate a building from the Roman High Empire.
The building reveals some elements of its history, although very incompletely searched. The plan corresponds to the type of Gallo-Roman rural theatres frequently encountered in Roman Gaul, with few specificities. The theatre is also found in a commune that has already delivered ancient elements from the 19th century.
The duration of use of the performance building is very small, about half a century, with the building built in the middle of the second century being destroyed by the end of the second or early third century.
