About

Thagaste () was a Romano-Berber town in present-day Algeria. Formerly part of the Berber Kingdom of Numidia, the present city of Souk Ahras (or Tagilt[ref. necessary]) was built on its ruins.

It is mainly known as the birthplace of Saint Augustine. It is located 100 km southeast of Annaba, former Hippo, a city of which he was bishop.
