allée couverte des Déserts
The covered driveway of the Deserts, also known as the covered driveway of the Butte-Vachon, is a covered driveway located in Argenteuil, in the Val-d'Oise department in France.
History: The site was known at the beginning of the 19th century as an uncultivated place located in the middle of cultivated plots, hence its name "Desert". As a result of the ravishing of the building's structure, it served as an improvised quarry until January 1867, when foreman Guedon, noting the presence of human bones and flint objects, reported the discovery. Excavations were then carried out by Louis Legay, president of the Paris Society of Archaeology and History. After the excavation, the tomb was restored by the Société française de Numismatique et d'Archéologie and the commune of Argenteuil protected it by the installation of a gate locked before 1899. The building was listed as a historical monument inventory in 1943. Originally owned by the Ministry of Culture, the building became property of the municipality after the signing of an agreement on 29 June 2007. The monument is only visited during Heritage Days.
