Piton des Neiges

The Piton des Neiges is the highest point on Réunion Island (France), at 3,070 meters above sea level. It is the highest point of the Indian Ocean. It marks the top of a volcanic building, the Piton des Neiges massif, which occupies three-fifths of the island's surface, with a diameter at sea level of about fifty kilometers.

This volcano would have been born at least five million years ago to emerge from the Indian Ocean probably more than three million years ago, giving birth to Réunion Island. It is a complex volcano largely eroded, it has not been in operation for more than 12,000 years.
