Sel de Bandrélé
Bandrélé salt is a natural resource of Mayotte, exploited on the island's only site where this production of salt from silt is still practised. A stamp issued by La Poste de Mayotte on 1 June 2002 pays tribute to this activity traditionally practised by women. Bandrélé village is part of the municipality of Bandrélé, located in Bandrélé Cove, south-east of Mayotte Island.
Its coastline is composed of a beach that separates the mangrove from a coastal plain, submersible at very high tides. The flow of water on this plain deposits a layer of clay-sandy mud, silt, which during the dry season makes this area suitable for salt exploitation. An eco-museum makes this traditional activity known.
