About

Saint-Front Cathedral in Périgueux is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the diocese of Périgueux and Sarlat. Located in the city centre of Périgueux, it has been listed as a historical monument since 1840 and as a World Heritage Site in 1998, under the title of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle in France. Back in its first days in the fourth and fifth centuries, the building was first a church, then an abbey before taking the title of cathedral in the sixteenth century, following the bag by the Huguenots of the episcopal see, the church Saint-Étienne-de-la-Cité.

Restored by Paul Abadie during the second half of the 19th century, St.Front Cathedral, like St.Marc's Basilica in Venice, has a plan in the form of a Greek cross and five cupolas on pendants that recall the structure of the Church of Saints Apostle of Constantinople. The building, first abbey church, took the name of the one who, according to legend, was the first bishop of Périgueux: Saint Front.
