The primatial basilica of Saint-Trophime d'Arles is a Romanesque church in the town of Arles located in Place de la République. Built on remains of late antiquity from 1100, it is one of the most important buildings in the Provencal Romanesque domain. It has a high nave of five vaulted bays in a broken cradle, flanked by narrow vaulted lower side, which dates from the mid-12th century, with a short transept whose cross, surmounted by a dome, supports the bell tower.
The choir and the walk-in date back to the 15th century. The primitive bell tower was replaced at the beginning of the 13th century by the current square tower, whose last floor was redone in the 17th century. The historical portal is realized around 1180-1190.
The two pediment doors that flank it were added at the end of the seventeenth century. Behind the church is the cloister Saint-Trophime. The North and East Romanesque galleries are decorated with high-quality sculptures dating from the second half of the 12th century.
The south and west galleries, vaulted on crossed warheads and made in the late 14th century, are Gothic in style. Access is via the courtyard of the building next to the church. A primatial time...
