Notre-Dame-du-Saint-Cordon Basilica in Valenciennes is a minor Catholic basilica located in Valenciennes, northern department. It was built in the 19th century to serve as the main centre for the devotion of Notre Dame du Saint Cordon, known by the procession of the "Tour du Saint Cordon" which took place in 1008 when the plague ravaged Valencienois.
History: Historically, devotion to Notre Dame du Saint Cordon took place in Notre Dame la Grande church, destroyed at the Revolution. Ancient documents tell of the destruction of this church, whose only architectural remains are in the buildings of the current sub-prefecture, and of the reliquaries of the church, including that of Saint Cordon. After the restoration of the cult, the new parish of Notre-Dame was awarded the old hall for the sick of the Hôtel-Dieu. His simplicity has earned him the nickname of "Our Lady the Grange" despite the work of beautification. In 1804 the Brotherhood of the Kings, charged with devotion, was restored.
