The bridge of the Gard is a three-level bridge for the passage of a Roman aqueduct. It is located in Vers-Pont-du-Gard next to Remoulins, not far from Uzès and Nîmes, in the French department of Gard. He's spanning the Gardon. Probably built in the first half of the first century under the Roman Empire, it ensured the continuity of the Roman aqueduct which led the water from Uzes to Nîmes. According to the latest research, it would have ceased to be used in the early sixth century.

Pont du Gard

In the Middle Ages, the batteries on the second floor were slit so that the structure could be used as a road bridge. He was joined by a road bridge in 1743-1747. The highest aqueduct bridge known to the Roman world and considered one of the most monumental examples of Roman engineering, it is classified as historical monuments by the list of 1840 and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 1985.
