About

The Oppidum de Marduel is an archaeological deposit on the territory of the commune of Saint-Bonnet-du-Gard. The occupation of the site would have started at the end of the bronze age and lasted nearly seven centuries. Known since the beginning of the 20th century, it was only in the 1980s that the most extensive excavations were undertaken under the direction of Michel Py (CNRS).

The main fortification covers more than 7 hectares. Today it is largely hidden by vegetation but the informed walker will discover the traces of it. Tanks giving witnesses of a small metallurgy have been reported, for the fourth – first centuries on the oppidum of Marduel.
