amphithéâtre d'Agen
The Agen Amphitheatre is an ancient performance building built in Aginnum in Aquitaine second, today in the Tanneries district of Agen, in the French department of Lot-et-Garonne. Its dating is uncertain, but its construction and subsequent enlargement may occur during the first century AD, according to architectural concetps that bring it closer to the amphitheatre of Bordeaux or Poitiers in France or Pula in Croatia. At its greatest development, it measures about 115 × 100 m for an estimated capacity between 12 and 15,000 spectators. Its abandonment is ongoing in the second half of the fourth century. Its existence is anticipated from the early 19th century and its location is approximately acquired in the early 1980s, northeast of the ancient city. However, it was discovered only through archaeological excavations carried out in 1988 and 1989 and was listed as a historical monument in 1991. Its remains are buried under recent developments.
