War memorial
monument national du Hartmannswillerkopf
The Hartmannswillerkopf National Monument is a World War I memorial located in the Upper Rhine. Inaugurated in 1932 by the President of the Republic, Albert Lebrun, it is one of four national monuments dedicated to the First World War with the ossuary of Douaumont (Meuse), Notre-Dame de Lorette (Pas-de-Calais), and the Memorial of the Battles of the Marne (Marne). It is the work of architect Robert Danis and sculptor Antoine Bourdelle.
Two distinct parts can be distinguished on the Hartmannswillerkopf site today: on the one hand the national monument consisting of the crypt and the national necropolis of Silberloch, on the other hand the battlefield with its remains and monuments. On 20 September 2023, the Hartmannswillerkopf (Viel Armand) memorial complex consisting of the National Necropolis, the National Monument and its crypt located at the unobstructed top of the Silberloch Pass, is one of 139 World War I memorial and funerary sites on UNESCO's World Heritage list.
