About

The covered alley of Barbehère is a megalithic monument located at Saint-Germain-d'Esteuil in the French department of the Gironde. Its architecture is characteristic of the aisles of Aquitaine while presenting some originality. The monument was erected in the Middle Neolithic but reused by various Neolithic cultures until Chalcolithic.

History: The monument is shown on the map of the Gironde at 1/40 Model:000th of 1875 as "tumulus" at its exact location. In the same year, the director of the Musée Préhistoire de Bordeaux, J. B. Gassies mentioned a monument he called dolmen du Bois Charnier which "was raped and collected human skeletons in the centre of the cella". François Daleau pointed out in 1876 that this dolmen was "near Potensac, commune of Ordonnac". At the beginning of the 20th century, a controversy arose as to whether there were two distinct dolmens located close to one another or one monument but quickly, it appeared that the thesis of uniqueness was the right one, no trace of the Dolmen du Bois Charnier could be found.
