Roman theatre
théâtre gallo-romain de Thénac
The Gallo-Roman theatre of the Arenes is an ancient theatre at the arena located in Thénac, in the French department of Charente-Maritime in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is part of an ancient rural sanctuary including at least thermal baths and a spring. Probably built during the reign of Nero and abandoned in the third century, its remains were classified as historical monuments in 1990. Large at least 84 m, it owes its particular architecture to the presence of internal foothills delimiting caissons that strengthen its structure and allow it to resist the thrust of the embankments that fill it partially.
