Church building
église Saint-Sulpice-et-Saint-Antoine de Bitry
The church Saint-Sulpice-et-Saint-Antoine de Bitry was listed as a Historic Monument on December 11, 1912. It is located in the heart of the village, and dominates it from its pyramid bell tower, pointed like a pencil towards the sky. This monument is by itself a summary of the history of the place.
It was around him that the village was formed, of which he kept the marks of all vicissitudes: the hold of the Abbey of Saint-Médard de Soissons, Norman and Hungarian invasions, struggles between the Abbé, the King and then the Sires de Coucy, Hundred Years' War, religious wars, French Revolution, and the first world conflict. For this reason, the monument has a composite appearance: exceptional remains of the small Carolingian church located on the foundations of a Gallo-Roman temple, massive bell tower built between the year thousand and the end of the twelfth century, nave and seigneurial chapel built from 1520 in the flamboyant Gothic style, amazing carved decoration of the first Renaissance, homogeneous set of furniture of the eighteenth century.
