History: The Castrum Vici super Axonum is a castrum built on an eminence, on the right bank of the Aisne, controlling the road between Amiens and Soissons. It was allegedly given to the abbey of Saint-Médard de Soissons by Princess Berthe, sister of the emperor Louis le Pieux. The count of Paris, Eudes, king of the Franks in 888, confirmed in 893 the possessions of the abbey Saint-Médard. On this occasion, the chronicle of Saint-Médard indicates that he had the abbey strengthened and repaired the castle of Vic-sur-Aisne. On 22 May 1048, at the council of Senlis, the archbishop of Reims Gui de Châtillon signed with the bishop of Laon Gébuin the restitution of the castle of Vic-sur-Aisne to the abbey of Saint-Médard de Soissons. During the 10th and 11th centuries, the castle is the scene of struggles between the lords of Coucy, the monks of Saint-Médard, and the kings of France, passing several times from one to the other.
