château royal de Collioure
The Royal Castle of Collioure (Catalan: Castell real de Cotlliure) is a fortified complex located on the town of Collioure, in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales. The castle itself is medieval. The first mention we have is from the beginning of the thirteenth century.
It was erected on the site of a fortified village in the 7th century. It was then redesigned from the end of the 13th to the 17th century by being incorporated into a citadel that gradually pushed all houses to two coves on both sides of the site. Seven centuries of work overlaid the various buildings that led to the present monument.
The entire development campaign reflects the change in function from the royal residence to the citadel, which has been classified as historic monuments since November 14, 1922.
