About

Awoingt British Cemetery is a First World War military cemetery located on the territory of the commune of Awoingt in the Northern Department.

History: The village of Awoingt was occupied by the Germans from 28 August 1914 and remained far from the fighting until 9 and 10 October 1918, when British troops seized the area. Emergency posts were set up in the village and the cemetery was set up to bury soldiers who died as a result of their injuries.

Character: The British cemetery in Awoingt contains 653 Commonwealth graves of the First World War, including a special memorial to a victim whose grave in the cemetery cannot now be found. The cemetery also contains 63 war graves of other nationalities, mostly German. This cemetery has an original shape. The German tombs are aligned along the north wall, perpendicular to the other tombs.

Location: Access to this cemetery is via a road to the right after the railway bridge towards Caudry.
