About

The Saint-Jean-de-Malte church of Aix-en-Provence on the Place Saint-Jean-de-Malte, at the corner of the rue d'Italie and the rue Cardinale, in Aix-en-Provence is the first Gothic church in Provence. It is located at the eastern end of Cardinale Street. It was built on the site of a first chapel erected by the Hospitallers of the Order of St John of Jerusalem at their installation in Aix in the 12th century.

Its construction work would have lasted from 1272 to 1277, even if these dates were not proven. The church bell tower is 67 metres away. This is the highest point in the city of Aix-en-Provence.

Today Saint-Jean-de-Malte is a parish church entrusted to the Fraternity of Apostolic Monks. Thanks to monastic offices, it is frequently open and can be visited. It surprises with its inner brightness, the colour of the stone, its sobriety, its contemporary organ built by Daniel Kern and its numerous paintings.

This church is classified as historical monuments by the list of 1840.
