The Baptistère de Riez is a paleo-Christian Baptistery located in the French department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France.
Foundation of the cathedral group: In the first century, Emperor Augustus founded the Civitas Julia Augusta Reiorum Apollinaris, which made Riez the oldest city in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. At the beginning of Christianity in the Roman Empire, the Catholic Church will layer its organization over that of the empire. Each civitas will become the seat of a bishopric after religious peace. For Jean-Rémy Palanque, the bishopric of Riez was founded in the fifth century. The first bishop known with certainty was Maximus, Saint Maxime, abbot of the abbey of Lérins, bishop of Riez between 433 and 460, whose name appeared on the list of participants in the regional council of Riez, in 439, then Fauste, between 461 and 485.
