About

The Abbey of Saint-Maixent-l'École is the church of the former Abbey of Saint-Maixent, in the commune of Saint-Maixent-l'École (French Department of Deux-Sèvres). In 1790, at the time of the Civil Constitution of the clergy, it became the episcopal seat of the newly created Diocese of the Deux-Sèvres within the framework of the Constitutional Church, and took the title of cathedral. She retained this title until the concordat of 1801, which consecrated the disappearance of the diocese and its reincorporation into the diocese of Poitiers. Since then it has served as a parish church.
