About

The abbey of Montbenoît is an abbey in the commune of Montbenoît, in the French department of Doubs in the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The abbey, built from the 11th century until the 20th century (clocher, wooden vault, adjoining parts), is remarkable for its architectural evolution (cloister of the 12th – 15th centuries, flamboyant Gothic choir of the 16th century, late Renaissance carved stalls, paintings, two chapels, arches in cross of warheads and cradle, vaulted kitchen...). The interior was vandalized in the 17th century by the armies of Bernard de Saxony-Weimar (called the "Swedish", in fact German recruits), mobilized by Richelieu to attempt to seize Burgundy.

Abbaye de Montbenoît

Due to wars and fires, it is the only medieval religious ensemble preserved in the Doubs. Its cloister has been classified as historical monuments since 1846. Its church, apart from the bell tower (finally inscribed on August 23, 2013), has been classified as historical monuments since November 7, 1922.
